Granite Countertop Care

Granite is extremely hard, heat and scratch resistant, however, you should use caution when cutting directly on or applying high temperatures to the surface. Granite holds heat which could cause injury. Cutting directly on the granite surface will damage cutlery and is not recommended.  Do not stand, sit, or lean heavily around sinks, cook tops, or weak areas within your counter top. Avoid dropping anything heavy directly on the counter top or banging stoves, fridges, and or chairs against the edges. Granite is one of the most durable products known but is not indestructible.

Make sure standing water around the faucet, soap dispenser, and or filtration systems, is removed immediately. Inspect seals regularly and tighten fixtures as necessary to prevent water from swelling the wooden sub-base underneath the granite. 

 

DAILY CARE

Daily care is as easy as cleaning with water and a clear mild dishwashing liquid. Blot up spills immediately verses wiping, rinse clean, and dry with a soft cloth. 

To reduce grease buildup on your countertop, mix 500ml – 1L water with 1 – 2 teaspoons of clear mild dishwashing liquid, and 3 – 4 tablespoons of white vinegar into a common house hold spray bottle. Do not use harsh chemicals, abrasive cleaners, or any heavy-acidic cleaning materials on your granite counter top. These include concentrated vinegar, ammonia, orange, lemon, degreasers, and or bleach base cleaners. If needed use a synthetic scrubbing pad or razor blade to remove hard deposits on your granite counter.

With the proper care, your granite surface will stay new-looking for many years to come. Should you notice a mark on your counter top the chart below has been prepared to assist:

Service hours are between 10am and 4pm, Monday to Friday. After hour or weekend appointments are available, however, a dispatch fee of $80, plus applicable taxes will be applied.  

 

SERVICE POLICY & PROCEDURES

 

  1. All requests for service must be approved by CRS prior to dispatching, in order for us  to allocate sufficient time to deliver effective service, combined with the correct level of expertise and tools needed within one trip. A payment of $180.80 ($160 min 2hrs charge + 20.80 HST) will be required prior to dispatching. Upon inspection, CRS will determine warrantable items and credit accordingly. 

  2. Customers are required to e-mail digital pictures of all warranty claims, 72 hours prior to dispatching of service. Any work not otherwise covered by warranty, or involving repeat visits due to a Customer failing to provide accurate details of the work required, will be billable at $80 per hour, per person, plus travel.

  3. Customers are required to reserve a full day to allow sufficient time for a service technician to arrive on site, assess and remedy items listed on the work-order. Any delays to gain access to the home or work space will be billable at $80 per hour, per person.

  1. A principal homeowner must be on-site to make sure all concerns are addressed properly, and will be responsible to sign off that the work has been inspected and is considered complete. Any return trips due to a Customer failing to inspect or report concerns, prior to the service technician leaving the site, will be billable at $80 per hour, plus travel.

  2. CRS reserves the right to leave a project site, without notice, if a Customer's behavior is rude, offensive, insulting or considered to be unprofessional. Any delays or return trips will be billable at a rate of $80 per hour, per person, plus travel.

  3. CRS reserves the right to take pictures and video footage during the delivery of service to validate warranty coverage. If at the time of service, or after reviewing images, CRS determines that work performed was not covered under warranty, the service visit will be billable at $80 per hour, per person, plus travel.

  4. CRS does not warranty products or services that have not been paid in full. Any service not covered under warranty must be paid in advance prior to dispatching.

 

 

HOW TO TEST YOUR GRANITE COUNTERTOP SEALER 

CRS Granite counter tops are sealed during the installation process with two types of sealers. First is a penetrating sealer that is designed to protect the structure of natural stone. It is applied to prevent oil or debris from absorbing into the natural pores of the stone.  Second is topcoat sealer which is used to remove excess film and to enhance the natural colour of the stone.

Because our granite overlay is 3/8” thick counter tops do not need to be resealed as often as 2 cm ( Once a year) or 3 cm (Every 6 months).  We recommend resealing granite overlay countertops once every two years, or as needed, depending on the evaporation conditions within the home, and or how often the counter is used. To determine if your stone needs to be resealed, simply place a small pool of water onto varies sections of the counter top and let stand for a half hour. If the stone darkens the counter should be resealed by trained professional, as shown in the videos below: 

 

 

 

HOW TO REMOVE MARKS IN A GRANITE COUNTERTOP

It is not uncommon for sealers to weaken over time, exposing the granite countertop to a variety of pollutants. Oil is the worst and one of the main reasons why it needs to be sealed, because it does not evaporate like other fluids. It is important to wipe oil spills up quickly. The longer oil sits on the counter the greater the risk it will leave a mark. It is not a stain, because oil marks can be removed, return the counter back to its natural colour and beauty.

The best way to remove oil from granite is to mix hydrogen peroxide (sold by hair salons), water and flour into a paste. Apply a thick lair to the affected area, cover with plastic wrap and let stand for 24 to 48 hours, depending on how long the oil mark has been left unattended.

Remove the plastic wrap and wipe away the paste with a damp cloth. The counter will appear dark at first but this will fade as the surface area dries over a time period of 24 to 48 hours, depending on the thickness of the stone. If the oil mark is still noticeable, repeat the process.

Once satisfied with the results, the granite countertop must be sealed by a trained professional. Contact CRS Granite to arrange an appointment.

 

HOW TO REPAIR A CRACK IN A GRANITE COUNTERTOP

 

 

Deep cracks should be cleaned with acetone, dried, then filled with acrylic crack filler. Tints can be used to match the colour of the stone if necessary. Use a razor blade to tap all along the crack to help penetration. Allow the acrylic crack filler to dry, scraping the excess off the surface with a clean razor blade.

 

Isolate the crack with yellow tape; allow 3-4 inches on either side of the crack, so you will be able to feather your polish.

 

For minor cracks we recommend starting off using a variable speed hand grinder set on low, with an aluminum back-up pad and 400 grit dry polishing pad, start to remove the peak of the crack. Do not use a rubber back-up pad as this may cause a dimple effect in the stone.

 

In severe cases, you may need to start off with a 200 grit to flatten the stone quickly, but make sure not to apply too much pressure. Also, be careful not to allow the stone to become too hot, as this may damage the stone even more. Older polishing pads tend to work better than new.

 

After 4 or 5 passes directly along the crack line, making sure the grinder and pad is flat and even. Do not tilt too much, as the goal is to flatten the peak of the crack. Overhead florescent lighting is helpful to see if the reflection is bending or distorting the image.

 

Once you are satisfied the crack is flat, move onto an 800 grit pad, treat it the same as the 400, but remember to increase applied pressure, while expanding the polishing line by about a half inch on either side, to avoid leaving scratches behind from the 400 grit. Older pads require

 

After 800 grit, move onto 1000 grit, 1500 grit, 2000 grit, 3000 grit and 5000 grit, making sure you increase the amount of pressure of each pad, while widen the polishing line in order to remove the scratches left by the previous pad. Do not allow the stone to become too hot.

 

If the stone appears a little dull, fuzzy or hazy, you may need to buff with a tinoxide powder. Mix 1 part water to 4 parts Tinoxide, or until it has the consistency of pancake mix.  Apply the tinoxide powder using your fingers all along the dull area a thin coat is all that’s needed. Repeating this process, after the stone is cool, allows you to blend the polish.

 

To enhance the shine of the stone even more, apply a thin coat of stone wax and let stand for 3 minutes. Remove excess wax with a razor blade, the rub with steel wool or dry cloth until the desired shine is achieved.
